The Punjab government has decided to extend school holidays by seven days in response to the scorching heatwave affecting the region. This decision, announced by Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar, aims to address parents' concerns and ensure the safety of students amidst extreme weather conditions. The extended holidays will now be observed from May 25 to 31 for all public and private schools in Punjab.

As part of the government's efforts to mitigate the impact of the heatwave, summer vacations have already been declared from June 1 to August 14 for both public and private schools. Additionally, revised school timings have been implemented to reduce exposure to high temperatures, with schools operating from 7am to 11:30am on weekdays and from 7am to 10:30am on Fridays.

Despite the government's safety measures, the All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association (APPSMA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the vacation schedule. The association has requested permission to conduct classes from 7am to 10am between June 1 and June 15, citing the frequent closures of schools due to extreme weather conditions.

Looking ahead, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning about an upcoming heatwave, forecasting temperatures 4 to 8°C above normal in Punjab and Sindh from May 21 to 27. The department attributes this heatwave to a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which is expected to intensify heatwave conditions during the specified period.

The decision to extend school holidays and implement revised timings reflects the government's commitment to prioritizing student safety during extreme weather conditions. As the heatwave continues to pose challenges, it is crucial for schools and authorities to work together to ensure the well-being of students and staff. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of heightened temperatures.
