Sindh Residents Face Risk Due to Infrastructure Neglect

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in various parts of Sindh this year, causing worry among the province's residents. This announcement comes at a critical time as essential infrastructure, such as the aging Dadu-Moro bridge, is in urgent need of repair to withstand potential floods.

The Dadu-Moro bridge, constructed in 1982 to link major cities along the River Indus, is currently in a deteriorating state, posing a significant risk during the upcoming rainy season. Despite ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the region after last year's devastating floods, key projects like the bridge's maintenance demand immediate attention from authorities.

The Sindh Flood Emergency Rehabilitation Project, with support from the World Bank, was initiated to address the aftermath of previous floods. While initiatives like the Cash for Work (CFW) program have shown positive outcomes, progress on crucial infrastructure developments, particularly roads, has been slow. A considerable amount of work remains unfinished, emphasizing the need for accelerated efforts across all affected areas in the province.

Moreover, the establishment and activation of 16 satellite stations along vital highways such as N-55, N-5, and M-9 are essential for providing timely assistance during extreme weather conditions. These stations must be swiftly completed to bolster the province's readiness and response capabilities.

As Sindh braces for potentially heavy rainfall, the state of critical infrastructure and ongoing rehabilitation projects remain key concerns.
