SSWMB takes action to improve sanitation in Karachi by directly employing sanitary workers, ensuring timely payment and essential amenities, and issuing show cause notices for subpar conditions during Eid.
Managing Director of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), Syed Imtiaz Ali Shah, recently chaired a meeting to address sanitation issues and tackle the shortage of sanitary workers in Karachi. The meeting highlighted the poor sanitation conditions in certain districts during Eid days, attributing it to the absence of sanitary workers. It was revealed that private companies failed to pay full wages and provide additional allowances, leading to worker absenteeism.
To combat this problem, the MD SSWMB announced a new initiative where all sanitary workers will be directly employed by a firm, ensuring timely payment of full wages. Furthermore, the company will offer essential amenities like accommodation, food, and transportation to the workers. Additionally, show cause notices will be issued to companies responsible for the subpar sanitation conditions during Eid.
During the meeting, private company representatives raised concerns about stolen dustbins, prompting the MD to urge the identification of culprits for legal action. The directive was supported by Executive Director Operations Tariq Nizamani, Director M&E Sabir Shah, and other officials present at the meeting.
