Pakistan Meteorological Department Warns of Severe Heatwave Impact

Several cities in Sindh, including Karachi, are currently grappling with a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record highs. Moenjodaro, a historical site, registered a scorching 51°C, marking the highest temperature in the country. Karachi, Dadu, and Jacobabad are also experiencing abnormally high temperatures, with Karachi hitting 37°C, which is more than two degrees above the seasonal average.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued warnings as Dadu and Moenjodaro recorded blistering temperatures of 49.5°C, surpassing normal levels by a significant margin. Hospitals in Jacobabad are overwhelmed with patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, as the mercury climbs to a staggering 50°C. Relief efforts are underway, with the establishment of camps across Sindh to aid those affected and prevent heatstroke cases.

Looking ahead, the region is bracing for more heatwaves, with Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz forecasting two additional waves in June. The current heatwave is anticipated to persist until the first week of June, posing challenges to daily life in the affected areas.

The impact of these extreme weather events, attributed to climate change, is evident in disruptions like prolonged power outages lasting up to 15 hours a day. Schools in Sindh have postponed exams, and half of the country's students are staying home to safeguard against the heatwaves' effects.
