IGP Punjab Investigates Threats Against ATC Judge

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab has confirmed that an investigation is underway following reported threats and harassment towards a judge of an Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in Sargodha. The complaint, filed by a special judge, revealed a message suggesting a meeting with a representative of the ISI in the judge's chamber.

In response to the concerns raised, security measures have been heightened around the ATC to address the perceived threats. However, the Lahore High Court has expressed worries about the implications of restricting access to the courts, emphasizing the negative message it conveys. The court has questioned the legal basis for preventing lawyers and litigants from entering the premises, stressing the importance of upholding the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Furthermore, the court has cautioned against using excuses to close courts and recommended that such actions should only be taken in exceptional circumstances. The IGP has been directed to identify the individual seeking to meet the judge, and the court has reserved its decision on the matter.
