The issue of heavy freight vehicles in Karachi, impacting traffic flow and road safety, prompts proposed solutions by authorities and stakeholders for effective management.

Heavy freight vehicles, including trucks, trailers, and tankers, have become a major concern for the city of Karachi, affecting traffic flow and road safety. To address this issue, the Supreme Court implemented a restriction in 2007, prohibiting heavy vehicles from operating within the city between 6am to 11pm, with a fixed entry time of 11pm.

Despite these regulations, the late-night influx of heavy vehicles continues to cause disruptions for residents, leading to increased travel times and a higher risk of road accidents involving these large vehicles.

Efforts to mitigate these challenges have been initiated by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and the Governor of Sindh, who have proposed diverting heavy vehicles through the Lyari Expressway. However, concerns have been raised about the feasibility of this plan due to the expressway's limitations and the diverse destinations of the heavy vehicles.

The Traffic Police are actively working on solutions to manage heavy vehicle traffic more effectively, including considering options to improve the movement of other vehicles during nighttime hours. One potential solution involves allowing smaller containers to enter the city during the day, which could help reduce congestion caused by the simultaneous entry of all heavy vehicles.

The issue of heavy freight vehicles on Karachi roads remains a pressing concern, impacting both traffic efficiency and road safety. While efforts are being made to address this challenge, further collaboration between authorities and stakeholders is essential to find sustainable solutions that benefit all residents and commuters in the city.
