Minister Leghari announces a comprehensive plan to reform the power sector, focusing on combating power theft, boosting energy capacity, and addressing circular debt for a more efficient and transparent energy system.

The Minister for Power Division, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, announced a comprehensive plan to overhaul the country's power sector, following directives from the Prime Minister. The aim is to combat power pilferage, over-billing, and the issue of circular debt plaguing the sector. Minister Leghari emphasized the government's commitment to improving the energy sector and addressing chronic issues that have long affected consumers.

One of the key focuses of the reform strategy is cracking down on power theft, which has led to significant financial losses for distribution companies. Minister Leghari highlighted that power pilferers, regardless of their status, will face strict consequences, including high-ranking officials found involved in such illegal practices.

Furthermore, the Minister stressed the urgency of rectifying the existing shortcomings in the power system, as the cumulative losses of distribution companies are projected to reach Rs 560 billion by June. He pointed out that power pilferers have consumed electricity units worth over Rs 300 billion, posing a severe threat to the economy.

To combat this issue, Minister Leghari announced a deadline for the removal of illegal connections ('kunda') by responsible officials, with stringent actions promised for non-compliance. The government also acknowledged the support of the Interior Ministry and FIA in assisting distribution companies to curb power theft.

In response to queries, Minister Leghari revealed plans to import solar panels with a capacity of 6800 megawatts and introduce incentive packages to boost power demand during the winter season. He also addressed the pressing issue of circular debt, which stands at around Rs 2400 to Rs 2500 billion, with a significant portion earmarked for recovery.

Overall, the government's roadmap for power sector reforms signals a proactive approach towards tackling longstanding challenges and ensuring a more efficient and transparent energy system for all consumers.
