Prince Rahim Aga Khan inaugurates Duiker Phase II and Nasirabad Solar Power Plants in Hunza, marking a significant step towards sustainable development and clean energy initiatives in the region.

Prince Rahim Aga Khan recently visited Hunza district in Gilgit-Baltistan to inaugurate the development of Duiker Phase II and Nasirabad Solar Power Plants. These plants, with a combined capacity of 3.6 MWp, are set to revolutionize the region's energy landscape.

The first phase of the Duiker Solar Power Plant, operational since November 2023, has already made a significant impact by increasing daily power availability for over 11,000 individuals. This has extended the hours of electricity from 10 to 17 in summer and 4 to 9 in winter, improving the quality of life for many residents.

With the upcoming completion of Duiker Phase II in November 2024, the generation capacity will increase to 1.6MWp, providing electricity to an additional 8,760 people. The transition to solar power at Duiker is not only expanding access to electricity but also contributing to environmental sustainability by reducing 1,100 metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually.

In addition, the Nasirabad Solar Power Plant, with a capacity of 2MWp and 1MWh battery storage, is expected to benefit 23,400 individuals in lower Hunza once operational by June 2025.

NPAK Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) under the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), is investing $6m in these projects. The financing structure includes equity, sustainable debt, and grants, with an additional $14m secured from development partners to enhance energy infrastructure in the region.

Looking ahead, NPAK Energy aims to attract more investments in clean and sustainable electricity sources across Hunza and its neighboring areas over the next five years. This initiative not only addresses the region's energy deficit but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, showcasing a commitment to sustainable development and public service improvement.

The inauguration of the Duiker and Nasirabad Solar Power Plants marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for Hunza and its residents. Through these initiatives, Prince Rahim Aga Khan and NPAK Energy are not only providing electricity to thousands but also setting an example of effective public-private partnerships for sustainable development. The impact of these projects goes beyond just powering homes; it signifies a brighter, cleaner, and more environmentally conscious future for the region.
