The Punjab government announces the establishment of an Environment Protection Authority to enforce environmental regulations and combat smog effectively, focusing on industries and transportation sectors.

The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards addressing the critical issue of smog and enhancing environmental quality by announcing the establishment of an Environment Protection Authority. This move comes as part of a broader initiative to enforce environmental protection regulations effectively across the region. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the pivotal role that this authority will play in ensuring compliance with environmental standards.

During a session chaired by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, discussions centered on tackling the environmental crisis, leading to the formation of a Smog Cabinet Committee. A Smog Monitoring Sectoral Cell, comprising representatives from various departments, will be operational within the Department of Planning and Development. This cell will focus on monitoring and controlling smog-related issues to curb environmental degradation.

The government's commitment to establishing a robust legal framework aligned with the CM's environmental vision was underscored by Aurangzeb. Immediate enforcement of regulations through coordinated efforts across different departments is on the agenda. Special attention will be given to cracking down on sources emitting smog, harmful chemicals, and smoke, with a strict adherence to environmental standards in the industrial and transport sectors.

Aurangzeb highlighted specific measures targeting brick kilns, with plans to prohibit operations without zig-zag technology. Non-compliant kilns are already facing closure as part of these efforts. Furthermore, stringent regulations will be imposed on vehicles, requiring mandatory fitness certificates. Vehicles emitting smoke or having faulty engines will be subject to bans, and a monitoring and certification system for vehicles with defective engines will be put in place.

Industries will be mandated to install emission control systems to reduce the release of harmful smoke and toxins, aligning with the government's broader objectives to combat smog and safeguard the environment.

The Punjab government's unveiling of plans to establish an Environment Protection Authority signals a proactive approach towards addressing environmental challenges, particularly the issue of smog. With a focus on stringent regulations and enforcement measures, coupled with targeted initiatives in key sectors such as brick kilns and transportation, the government aims to make significant strides in improving air quality and protecting the environment.
