Transportation Department Invests $830 Million in Infrastructure Resilience

The Biden administration has announced a significant investment of $830 million to fortify bridges, roads, ports, and other critical infrastructure against the escalating threats posed by extreme weather events intensified by climate change. This initiative, spearheaded by the Transportation Department, will fund 80 projects across 37 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

The majority of the funding, amounting to $621 million, will be channeled into 36 projects focused on enhancing the resilience of existing infrastructure. These projects will involve implementing measures such as improving drainage systems, repositioning roadways, and elevating bridges to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions. An additional $119 million will be allocated to safeguarding, reinforcing, or relocating vulnerable coastal infrastructure like highways. The remaining funds will be utilized to enhance evacuation routes and bolster resilience strategies.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the critical nature of this investment, highlighting the profound threat that climate change-induced extreme weather poses to infrastructure, community well-being, and supply chains. He underscored the collaborative nature of the initiative, characterizing it as the inaugural dedicated program where the federal government is partnering with states and tribes to enhance infrastructure resilience.
