Federal Ombudsman Ejaz Ahmed Qureshi and Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Asif Hyder Shah recently spearheaded a crucial meeting in Karachi to address the pressing issue of prison reforms in the region. The gathering brought together key officials from various departments to assess the current state of prisons in Sindh and devise strategies for meaningful enhancements.

During the meeting, Chief Secretary Syed Asif Hyder Shah unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at boosting the efficiency of correctional facilities across the province. One of the key plans involves the installation of audio and video link systems in all Sindh prisons to facilitate court appearances and enable better communication with families. Furthermore, a new prison spanning 500 acres is set to be constructed in Karachi to alleviate overcrowding and elevate living standards for inmates.

Noteworthy budgetary adjustments were also announced, with the allocation for providing quality food to prisoners being doubled to a substantial 2,400 million. This significant increase underscores the authorities' unwavering commitment to the well-being of those in custody. To ensure rigorous oversight, 22 committees will be tasked with monitoring conditions in specific prison facilities. Moreover, educational and vocational programs are being expanded to benefit a total of 2,824 prisoners, including female inmates at Karachi Central Jail who will have access to digital courses from reputable platforms like Google and Amazon.
